Revisiting expectations

Great leaders on the journey of building high performing teams go through certain cycles with their teams. Sometimes you’ll be building a new team up and showing them the basics. Other times you will be taking an intermediate level team and pushing them to elite status. There are many different phases a team can be in, but one thing to remember as a Leader is to always revisit your core expectations for the team.

It doesn’t matter if it is a new person, or one of your most experienced team members. Its your role as a leader to constantly revisit the basic expectations you have for the team. It might be the general standard of behavior you expect from your team, or the way your company deals with privacy matters. It might be the expectations you have from a delivery perspective, or the the way you expect our people to conduct themselves outside of the office.

The key part here is to clearly communicate the standards, consistently revisit these expectations, and get commitment from the team on these expectations.

Sometimes your team will forget, and they’ll need to be reminded, and sometimes there will be a few individuals who will try and push the boundaries and its your job to keep them in line.

It’s all part of the journey in building a high performing team.
