Getting fit for work

New people joining the team have a lot on their plates for the first few weeks. Learning all the IT systems, learning the internal processes, learning all the names of the colleagues, and the lingo used by the organization. All of this is tiring stuff.

But sometimes what is underestimated is the pace and urgency that different organisations operate at. Some industries are all about the pace urgency, hospitality and certain types of sales roles are good examples of that. Small organisations that deliver projects quickly can also be an example of requiring pace and urgency.

As a new person, sometimes they need to get fit for this increase in volume and activity. Getting used to all the meetings, the emails, the phone calls, and the general workloads. Sometimes it can take a few weeks to get fit. Whilst getting fit, you’ll see new people yawning, looking tired, forgetting the little things, and getting used to this new way of operating.

As a leader its important to keep this in mind, help the new person through the journey, and make sure that there are plenty of fitness drills along the way.
